Biographical Details

Stuart has lived in Buckfastleigh since 1983 and has been a National Park Authority Member continuously since 2001.  He is particularly interested in economic development and sustaining working towns and communities on Dartmoor.  Stuart has been a District councillor since 1999 and having been Chairman of the Economy Committee and the inaugural Chairman of scrutiny, he became an Executive Member with specific responsibilities for corporate resources which is essentially the finances of the Council.  Stuart retired from his screen print business in 2015 and is a full time Councillor being a County and District Councillor.  Between 2009 and 2017 he has been the County Cabinet member responsible for adult social care and for the eight years prior to that he was Vice Chairman then Chairman of the social care and health scrutiny committees.  He is now looking forward to a change to widen his experience of the work of the Council and will be responsible for the economic development and regeneration across Devon, alongside responsibility for post 16 education, skills and training.  He will be a board member of the Devon and Somerset Local Enterprise Partnership.  In his spare time Stuart enjoys sailing and it is nearly 50 years since he first learned to sail in Cornwall where he lived before moving to Devon.
