We aim to protect and maintain natural habitats and areas of ecological significance across Dartmoor, maintain public access to this beautiful space.  This includes our statutory duty to act as the planning authority.

The Role

We are offering a fantastic training opportunity for a Business Administration Apprentice at Dartmoor National Park Authority.  This apprentice will be based in our Planning service, working alongside our small but experienced team of Planning Administration staff, assisting them with providing support to the Development Management service, and to members of the public.

The role will provide support to a wide range of administration functions including typing letters and documents, maintaining electronic filing, responding to email and telephone enquiries, receiving and processing planning applications, inputting and checking data.

As part of this role, you will be updating and maintaining systems and databases for: Planning Applications, Appeals, Enforcement Cases and Pre-Application advice. You will also carry out planning-related searches and provide information as requested to agents, callers, and outside bodies as necessary.  No prior knowledge of Planning is needed; full training and support will be provided.

You will learn to use a range of MS Office applications, (Word, Excel, Access, Teams and Outlook, PowerPoint), plus you will be trained to use the planning systems Tascomi, Idox, and digital mapping systems.

Opportunities to experience work in a range of other departments at DNPA, including Resources, Finance, HR and IT can be incorporated to enhance the experience of the Apprenticeship.  Training and development days in the National Park will also be available.

To succeed in this role, you should be a confident communicator, be able to work efficiently to meet deadlines, be flexible, with an eye for accuracy and detail, and enjoy working in a small but highly committed team.  A keen interest and willingness to learn is essential.

The Apprenticeship

As an Apprentice you will be supported in ongoing on-the-job training in this role based in the Planning Administration team.  Alongside this, you will enter into a training agreement to gain a Business Administration (Level 3) apprenticeship qualification.  Formal training will be provided by South Devon College, one day per week to cover knowledge modules as part of the Level 3 apprenticeship.

We expect that this opportunity will equip the Apprentice with a solid understanding and experience in a business administration role. The skill and knowledge developed will allow you to progress on to a future administration role.

As this opportunity is based in our Planning team it also offers an insight into the world of Planning, Development Management and Enforcement. The successful candidate may choose to go on to pursue a career as a Planning Officer.

Although there is no guarantee of a permanent position with the Authority upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, we will review this at the time and provide appropriate support to help the apprentice secure future employment.

The candidate must be able to get themselves to work at our office base in Bovey Tracey, and also to the South Devon College site in Paignton. Travel expenses to and from college will be reimbursed.

For the second year of the apprenticeship the annual salary will be based on the appropriate National Minimum Wage.
