The Dartmoor Hill Farm Project was set up to try to ensure a viable future for Dartmoor farmers. Since 2003 the Dartmoor Hill Farm Project has supported farmers on Dartmoor to establish and run a wide range of projects to add value to their businesses and to increase vocational skills.

The project is hosted by Dartmoor National Park Authority and funded from 2017-2020 by the Princes Countryside Fund, DNPA, the Heritage Lottery Fund, through Moor Than Meets The Eye and the Duchy of Cornwall.
Environmental Land Management Scheme (ELMs)
As part of the UK’s exit from the EU the government department responsible for overseeing our agricultural industry, Defra, is developing a new Environmental Land Management scheme (ELMs) to support farmers.
Dartmoor was one of a number of “Tests and Trials” taking place around the country, researching and piloting different approaches to delivering ELMs. On Dartmoor the project looked at:
- How do we develop a land management plan which works for common land?
- What does a payment by results system which works for both 'home farms' and the commons look like?
- Is there a role for private finance within ELMs at a local level?
- What role can National Park Authorities play in shaping, facilitating and delivering ELMs?

The project began in January 2020 and ended on the 1 December 2021. The final report and key findings were submitted to Defra.
