Local Plan Review
The local plan sets out policies to guide future development in the National Park and is the starting point when we make a decision on planning applications. A lot has changed since we adopted our current local plan and we are now going through the process of reviewing it. The local plan will cover issues such as; house extensions, design, the environment, listed buildings, housing, business, farming, tourism, quarrying, and land for development.
We completed the first consultation of the Local Plan Review in October 2016 which offered residents, communities, visitors, businesses and other organisations an opportunity to tell us their views on how the new local plan should guide future development on Dartmoor. The Issues Consultation Paper set out the likely issues the new local plan will need to deal with.
> Issues Paper (October 2016)
We have published an Issues Consultation Report (April 2017) summarising the written responses received and the notes of meetings and drop in events held during the consultation period.
We are currently collecting evidence which will inform the local plan. Part of this evidence included our Land Availability Assessment which determines which sites could, in technical terms, be developed. We are now starting to talk with communities about which of these sites should be developed. We have written a 'housing sites quick guide' to help explain this process. This is a first step in the process of looking at sites, and no decisions have been made for the new Local Plan. In the National Park we do not expect to allocate large areas of land for housing such as may be required nationally, however we do need to support Dartmoor's communities by identifying enough suitable land to meet their local housing and employment needs.
We will be attending an open meeting with the Parish and Town Councils of Dartmoor's largest settlements over the Autumn, and encourage the public to come along. These are the towns and villages where we expect we will need to allocate land for development. At these meetings we will talk about the Local Plan review, the process for identifying potential sites, and the options which we can consider in each community. Please see our first Newsletter for more details.
