Challenge 44: Improve your local community for wildlife
Points available: 4
About the challenge
This challenge is about looking beyond your garden walls to raise awareness about the wildlife in your community.
Think about why wildlife is important to you and find a way to share that passion.
You could
- join your local wildlife group or if there isn’t one set one up!
- inspire your friends and neighbours to make small changes and garden for wildlife.
- look at the shared spaces where you live, your parks and roadside verges. Could they be improved for wildlife? Write to your local councillor to ask them to leave the grass verges for pollinators
Helpful tips
Roadside verges could be fantastic for wildlife, full of old haymeadow flowers and grasses which could benefit pollinating insects and small mammals. Communities across Britain have created roadside nature reserves to help wildlife. You can be inspired by Plantlife’s Roadside Verge Campaign
A great idea is to think about how you could connect up all the gardens in your community into one fantastic nature reserve for wildlife. Hedgehog Highways are routes between garden which hedgehogs and other small mammals can use. It’s a great project to get neighbours talking and sharing their love for wildlife.
