Works to Dead or Dangerous Protected Trees

Works to Dead or Dangerous Protected Trees

If a tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or is located within a Conservation Area, permission is not normally required to carry out work to a dead tree or to remove an immediate risk of serious harm.

Where possible, please give the Authority at least five days' notice before carrying out works. If emergency works are required, please notify us as soon as reasonably practicable after the work has been completed.

When notifying us, please provide:

  • Your name and contact details
  • The location of the tree
  • A plan showing the tree's position
  • Photographs of the tree
  • A description of the condition of the tree and the works carried out or proposed

Please send this information to trees@dartmoor.gov.uk .

Please note that the exemption only applies to work that is necessary because the tree is dead or poses an immediate risk. The Authority may request evidence to support the use of the exemption.

For further information on exemptions relating to protected trees, please see our guidance on tree works.
