Dartmoor Delight: A day of discovery with 'Refugees Rock'

Dartmoor Delight: A day of discovery with 'Refugees Rock'

National Parks can provide comfort, security, and escape, for so many people.

Nestled in the heart of Devon is our beautiful Dartmoor National Park; an enchanting place where rolling hills meets dramatic tors, and ancient landscapes whisper tales of the past.

Recently our Community Engagement Ranger Kats had the privilege of introducing this special landscape to the ‘Refugee Rocks’ group, who spent an afternoon filled with laughter and learning, and left with a newfound appreciation for the beauty that is Dartmoor National Park.

This diverse group spanning various ages, genders, languages, and backgrounds embarked on a Dartmoor adventure filled with discovery. Despite all residing in Devon none had previously had the opportunity to venture into the moorland's expanses.

Living in an environment where access to natural spaces can be limited, this experience provided a refreshing change, an exciting opportunity, and a chance to learn new things. Pouring water into the fake river

Dartmoor's water

The afternoon began with an introduction to the Dartmoor water cycle. Everyone gathered round as Kats used a model to show the intricate ways water travels across the moors. The group got involved, pouring water in, and all having a feel of some iconic Dartmoor granite.

It was an insightful lesson for all to see how water traverses the Dartmoor landscape, meandering through rivers, leats, and streams as it carves its way through the rugged terrain.

Sphagnums and sundews: A boggy adventure

Next up was a boggy trek to a magnificent mire where the group squelched their way through the bog on a quest to spot some sundew, while also discovering the importance of mires on the moors.

Unfortunately, no sundew were spotted but luckily no one fell down, and only one boot got stuck, which was swiftly rescued and returned to its owners foot.

Quarry tales and granite wonders:

The adventure continued with a slow trek to Haytor quarry, with lots of pictures along the way, and a parade of willing volunteers to help bring the tea, coffee, and snacks along!

Once at the quarry Kats talked to the group about the history of quarrying on the moor and the hard work and dedication that took place here to move the granite as far as London and shaping a big part of Dartmoor’s history.

Pause for reflection

Every Dartmoor adventure needs a moment of rest, relaxation - and refreshments!

The group sat taking it all in and just enjoying each other’s company with a nice warm drink. The sense of community and shared experience added an extra layer of warmth to the chilly Dartmoor air, creating memories that will linger forever.

Heading back

At the end of this exciting afternoon the group left with a newfound appreciation for the world of National Parks. Dartmoor, as always, proves to be a place for everyone; where stories unfold, connections are made, and the magic of the moors captured everyone’s hearts.

The ‘Refugee Rocks’ group can’t wait to return.

The healing power of green spaces

Stepping into the great outdoors is not just about taking a casual stroll but is a journey into mental wellbeing.

Moments in nature grant invaluable pauses allowing stress to dissipate and for a group with limited access to nature, a day on Dartmoor helped to restore their equilibrium and give a mental health restart.

Despite the slightly chilly temperatures our group unanimously fell in love with Dartmoor’s undeniable beauty and serenity, and left with a shared appreciation for the outdoors, underscoring the significance of such projects in providing a gateway to nature for everyone.

Our landscape certainly left its mark on each member of this group proving that even in the face of cold winds, warmth can be found in the embrace of Dartmoor.
