About the challenge

How bee friendly is your garden or outside space? Clear a patch in your garden to sow some bee friendly flower seeds and watch them grow

Bees need to be able to reach the pollen and nectar so simple flowers are best. Go for a mixture of annuals which will put on a nice display in the first year and plants like lavender, thyme, and honeysuckle which are great at providing us with colour and perfume and the bees with nectar. Try to grow the plants from seed to avoid bringing plants into your garden which could have been treated with pesticides  harmful to bees.

Helpful tips

Don’t worry if you’ve only got a window box or a few tubs or planters you can still play an important role in helping your neighbourhood bees. Every flower counts so lets make our gardens blooming brilliant.

More information

The British Beekeepers Association has produced some information on the best plants for bees so have a look at their website. There are also some great books out there by people like Professor Dave Goulson, a top expert on all things bee related
