From Iron Age hillforts and medieval castles to rifle ranges and anti-glider poles, Dartmoor has played its part in the defence of the nation. In this illustrated talk, Lieutenant Colonel (Retired)Tony Clark OBE will look at the role of the military on Dartmoor from the early 1800’s to the present day. He will share his research, starting with those early exercises, the establishment of the first artillery training area in Britain and camp in 1875, the men, the equipment and their training. He will also include the support that the military makes to Dartmoor and its communities.


Tony lives with his wife near Okehampton, where he was brought up until the age of 10. He served with the Parachute Regiment, commanded the training areas in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset for 6 years then after retiring from active service at 55, managed the Armed Forces’ interests on Dartmoor for 11 years. He maintains an active interest in local history and photography, and is currently Chairman of the Dartmoor Trust with its over 30,000 publicly available images of Dartmoor.
