Dartmoor Educators Forum
Tuesday, 11 March 2025 at 09:45 - 16:00
This inspiring landscape is brought to life for thousands of children every year by the talented community of educators who work across Dartmoor. Together we all provide opportunities for adventure, quiet reflection, playfulness, investigating the past, scientific enquiry and much more.
This forum is a chance for us all to get together, reflect on what we do, and to network, learn, and share experiences.
This year we are being hosted by our colleagues from the Dartmoor Training Centre at Prince Hall in the heart of Dartmoor
River, Bogs and Wetland
Dartmoor gets more than its fair share of rain, so how do we celebrate it? We’ll be looking at Dartmoor’s rivers and bogs throughout the morning and how we use all this watery resource with our schools and groups.
Our main speaker, Michelle Roberts will set the scene for us
Developing experiential learning through the outdoors with a focus on Rivers
How do you develop geographical skills through field work with primary age children ? How can we use the outdoors to improve children's knowledge and understanding about rivers ? In this workshop we will explore the requirements of the national curriculum for geography with a focus on rivers. We will provide you with the theory and practical examples of how you can teach the concept of rivers in the outdoors. We will provide you with a tool kit of ideas to take back to your school which covers Geography and other National Curriculum areas.
We’ve also invited the Dartmoor Headwaters Natural Flood Management project to share with us what they are doing to slow the flow and how we can build their message into our practice.
We also plan to look at rivers from a river fly’s perspective, learn more about how our rivers can unlock the geography curriculum and how we can have adventures safely alongside them. If you would like to contribute to this session please drop us a line and we’ll put it all together.
- Update from the Park
Find out more about some of the latest projects the Park is involved in as well as updates and news about access and camping. There will also be some time to reflect on some of the results of our Educators Forum Survey. If you have not had chance to fill it in yet please do so before the forum meets.
- Hands-on workshop
To help balance the indoor sessions there will be an opportunity for some practical learning outside so please bring outdoor clothing - boots/wellies, gloves, warm hat, waterproof jacket etc
Quick fire Skills-share
