Protecting Habitats for Dartmoor's Dormice

Protecting Habitats for Dartmoor's Dormice

Thursday, 26 November 2020 at 19:00 - 19:30

In response to the national lockdown we've organised a short programme of online talks to take us through the winter evenings and learn more about Dartmoor's incredible heritage and wildlife.

Tonight we are joined by local expert Matt Parkins to shine a light on these secretive mammals which can be found across the woodlands of Dartmoor.

The wooded valleys of north and east Dartmoor provide an important refuge for many wild species, some of which are becoming nationally scarce. One of these suffering a rapid decline in numbers is the dormouse, but various conservation organisations are working to manage areas of the landscape to halt these declines. The Woodland Trust and its partners are playing a key role in some of the large woods in these valleys around the moor and, with the help of a team of volunteers, they are monitoring the dormouse as a way to evaluate their large scale woodland restoration projects.
Matt has worked both as a volunteer and a Woodland Trust contractor and says "I am fortunate to be involved in this valuable work and look forward to sharing stories, photos and videos with others with an interest in the wild woods of Dartmoor."

The talk will take place online on the Lifesize video app. Joining instructions will be emailed to you the day before the event. The talk will be 25-35 mins with an opportunity for questions at the end
