About the challenge

One of the great joys of nature is using our senses to feel connected to it whatever age we are. We are all used to looking and listening to the world around us but we don’t always remember to use our sense of touch. Find a nice shallow stream and paddle in it lifting up stones to see what might be living on them- you might find the fantastic construction of a caddis fly- a protective shell-like creation made from silk and tiny stones or twigs.

Take extra care when you are next to or in the water- the stones can be slippy and uneven and make sure to only stay in the shallows.

Helpful tips

Keen to find out more about life in Dartmoor’s rivers? Keep a look out for the dipper, a dark brown bird with a white bib, that skims the rivers in search of insects to feed its young. In the summer look out for the golden ringed dragonfly hunting along the water’s edge or the beautiful demoiselle, shining metallic green whilst resting on the bankside plants.

Take a look beneath the surface. You can find out more about the life in the water by dipping for it. All you need is a net and a clean white tray or tub. Put some river water in the tray. Sweep your net through the water then empty it out into the tray to see what you’ve found. Let the water settle and you’ll be surprised by the tiny creatures you find. Make sure you put all your creatures back carefully after you’ve looked and only work by shallow water.
