We are kicking off the Dartmoor Outdoor Festival with a day of fun activities for families to help them discover Dartmoor at Haytor Visitor Centre
There will be lots of a mini adventures and activities to try out and plenty of ideas to help you get the most from your visit to Dartmoor however adventurous you are. Pick up some map and compass skills, discover if you’ve what it takes to be a Countryside Code Hero or try your hand at our Pack a Backpack Challenge.

Challenges include

  • Compass challenge- try and navigate around our course and unravel the mystery word
  • Pack a back pack challenge- what sort of things should you take with you on an adventure. Choose from our wide selection of items. Do you really need to take the kitchen sink to walk up to Haytor? Would you take a big pack if you were  out for  a full day?
  • Tent pitching challenge- How quickly can you pitch one of our tents? Will you make it onto the leader board? Learn all about backpack camping on the moor when you are hiking; where you have a right to camp and where you don't.
  • Orienteering challenge- follow our self-guided trail and navigate around Haytor Common
  • Countryside Code Hero - take a look at our countryside scene and help Ranger Ralph work out what things are  breaking the countryside code. Can you spot them all?

Throughout the day we will be offering taster walks around the area with one of our DNPA experts so you can learn more about the wildlife, ancient history and projects we are undertaking to safeguard Dartmoor for future generations.. These will include an Archaeology Walk to discover more about how people have helped shape the landscape of Dartmoor over thousands of years, The Nature of Dartmoor-join our ecologist to discover how important the commons are for wildlife. Take a trip to Emsworthy Mire and be inspired about bogs and mires. All the the details are on the Dartmoor Outdoor Festival Website

Haytor is the perfect place to get your first taste of Dartmoor. Head up to the impressive Haytor Rocks to look out across the rest of Devon or explore the industrial past and walk along Devon's first railway following the old stone rails, or time-travel back to the Bronze Age to find ancient, ruined round houses which are over 3,000 years old.
The Visitor Centre has lots of ideas, leaflets and books to help you plan your next Dartmoor adventure.
