What is Heritage Trails?

The map can be used for the following things:

To learn about the history and wildlife of Dartmoor
To plan your own walks to explore the heritage of Dartmoor
To follow one of the pre-planned trails
To submit your own walk for others to share

This site has been supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of the Moor than meets the eye Landscape Partnership Scheme to help you discover and better understand the abundance of wildlife and archaeology that Dartmoor has to offer. Dartmoor is one of the most important sites for Bronze Age archaeology in Western Europe and contains over 8,000 historic features reflecting human activity in the area for over 3,550 years on Dartmoor.

Dartmoor is also home to some very special wildlife and contains species which are of international importance.

Submitting a trail

Submitted trails are subject to verification by Dartmoor National Park Authority, prior to publishing on this website. Heritage Trails will need to follow footpaths and bridleways, or over other land to which the public have a right of access, or where the landowner has given permission. The Authority will also take into account issues including erosion and potential impacts on wildlife and reserves the right not to publish a submitted trail on the Heritage Trails Map.
